ABOUT

The Space Department at Sandberg Instituut is devoted to experimental spatial practices rethinking and reimagining engaging with space in its social, ecological, political, technological and economic dimensions. Grounded in urban discourse, the criticality of contemporary art and the immediacy of good design, the Space Department advocates for a future-oriented, context-driven, socially and ecologically aware way of doing things (EcoTechnoFuture). The Space Department pursues its vision through education (Studio for Immediate Spaces), research (Space Research) and publishing (Space Issues). The Space Department is directed by Something Fantastic (Elena Schütz, Julian Schubert, Leonard Streich) and Ludwig Engel.

STUDIO FOR IMMEDIATE SPACES (SIS)

Studio for Immediate Spaces is one of five permanent master programs at Sandberg Instituut. Here, graduate students with various backgrounds are working collectively and individually with an international team from the fields of urbanism, architecture, design, art, and theory on developing independent and critical ‘undisciplinary’ spatial practices.

SPACE RESEARCH

Space Research gathers all Space Department activities aimed at expanding the knowledge of spatial production through artistic research, from artistic field studies to research collaborations with public and academic institutions. Through Sandberg Instituut’s Research Fellowship Program, artists, practitioners and scientists are invited to independently work on space-related questions within the Space Department framework.
